Rainbow hippies, listen up.
I'm speaking on behalf of the long term residents and more than half of the businesses in
Dali. We do NOT want a rainbow gathering in Dali.
Why? Here are the reasons:
(1) No hippies. why not? You do have to ask yourself that question. You already know that
some people who live here are already openly hostile towards you. We do not want you here.
In other words, get it into your head and fuck off already.
(2) Rainbow is a cult. Try to proof it's not.
(3) The local businesses are not happy with you as you don't spend money here.
(4) The rainbow gathering is jeopardizing our lifestyle here as long term residents, because,
fuck man, just look at yourselves. You give foreigners here a bad name, so in other words,
fuck off.
(5) A lot of the young Chinese are waiting to get hold of one of you and shit kick your teeth
in one day. Don't say that you never been warned. It'll come and it'll be random. Trust me on
that one. So leave.

This is not a fucking joke. WE DO NOT WANT DIRTY RAINBOW HIPPIES IN DALI. GO BACK TO
THAILAND. GO TO INDIA, wherever, JUST FUCK OFF.

A big note of thanks to all you hippies who find yourself Rainbow Gathering-less in Dali.

Take your dreads, your dogs and your drugs and piss off because we don't want you here.

Your presence is bad for every other foreigner who is trying to have a good life here.

Why? You waltz in without finding out things like who owns the land [the government possibly?]; why fires shouldn't be lit [fire danger], and how to organise an event [get local people on side, build relations, get permission from the appropriate people].

You also fuck it up for others by promoting drug taking [can you really claim that none of you take drugs], wrecking a water source, damaging the fragile ground at 3100m [have you ever thought that the envirnment up there might not support all you folk] and why on earth did you choose to go there in the rainy season?

So move on to some other place where you too can fuck up the environment, undermine the good relations of foreigners and locals, etc.

Get a life, get a job. Cut your hair. Settle down. Put down roots. Stop sponging off others. Stop claiming you are children of the earth and want pure organic food when half of you smoke. Stop saying you are a family when you behave disfunctionally. Stop thinking you are right and enlightened and others are evil, bad, dumb, etc. Stop thinking of things you can buy to take to other places to sell - isn't this just as bad as those corporations. Go back to your middle-class parents and make peace with them. Stop exploiting other cultures, taking a digeridoo there and a dream catcher there, and stop shopping at the spiritual supermarket. You are not the choosen ones. You are just hopeless drifters. Get over it. Mature. Grow. Realise how naive you were.

Stop looking for signs. Rainbows can mean it has just rained - they can also mean it is about to rain.

Don't come back here. Ever. Tell everyone what a bad time you had. How the police broke up your precious gathering. How oppresive it is in China.
Send out an SOS with your drums (surely not made from animals?) Make smoke signals with your ganga pipes.

Tell them how you fucked up. How you shouldn't have been on the mountain. That the organisers hadn't really got their shit together. That only a few people went because they couldn't organise a pissup in a brewery. That now because of your actions it will not be possible for other foreigners to do anything without suspicion. That you trashed a beautiful sacred place in the mountains. That there are still scars on the mountain from your presence. How the local people took down the markers to the place because you hadn't even smoothed the way with them.

So did you get enlightened? Or are you already? OR do you need enlightenment delivered in the form of a fist?

What kind of spin are you going to put on this now? Is it karma? Your bad karma?

Why do you all look the same?

Why does this email touch a raw nerve with you? Have you ever been so lost? No one wants you. Take your STDs, your herbal teas, take your goatees, take your hemp t-shirts, take your patchouli and sandalwood incence and FUCK OFF. Before you do any more damage.

Did the people here invite you? No.
Did other foreigners want you here? No.

Thanks for all the damage. From all the people trying to make a difference - fuck off. From all the people who care about this place and the people and culture - FUCK OFF. From all the people who for decades have been working with local people, fighting poverty, trying to improve health, helping those with AIDS, working with villagers, teaching and learning - FUCK OFF.

We curse you for what you have done to this place. May your odorous presence and impact be washed away by the rains.

Peace and Love,

I apologize for the aggression of the two mails of hate that were sent to the
group recently. As soon as we received these mails we talked about it and tried
to understand the reasons behind it. It is very hard to say but obviously we
need more communication with those who may have been disturbed in one way or
the other by our "presence". We wished they'd come and talked to us about their
problems with us but, for some reason, they didn't do it and chose to write to
the group.

With this reply I just want to clear a few things (that I don't want to call
"lies" but rather "misunderstandings"). Obviously these people know close to
nothing about the rainbow family and have been pretty picky in judging some
people and some actions in associating them with the rainbow. Let's get it all
clear.

I ran out to ask the owners of some local businesses in Dali to ask what they
think about this. They were absolutely shocked to read this. Who gives these
people the right to speak "on behalf of the long term residents and all these
businesses in Dali" we don't know.

Curious. We have received no such "open hostility" and no one has actually
presented ANY such opinion against us here. We really DO NOT know that. In fact
the feeling we have is just the opposite. We have great communication with the
local people around us here in Dali and NOBODY came to us stating A SINGLE
opinion against us. We'd like to hear them. We really would like to know if
there is any feeling against our being here, if we are creating any disturbance
but nobody said anything.

> (2) Rainbow is a cult. Try to proof it's not.

You are free to see anything as a cult. The cult of football fans or the cult
of nature lovers or the cult of "f**k America". There is no need to prove
anything. We do not do anything wrong.

> (3) The local businesses are not happy with you as you don't spend money

Is it the real reason these guys are angry with us? Sorry, we don't spend so
much money as some other travelers. In fact, we do spend much money here but
rather than doing the classic tourist thing of buying souvenirs and spending
money in bars, we support the small business. Ask the local vegetable and fruit
sellers, ask the street vendors, ask the little shops. Do we need to visit the
tourist bars and get drunk every night to deserve to be in Dali?
(I don't know the guys who wrote these mails but it sounds like they own
some of the tourist businesses that couldn't sell anything to the rainbow
family). And believe me, in doing this we have MORE people making business with
foreigners in Dali and they seem to be happy about it.

We have some long term residents (as well as Chinese people of Dali) who come
to the gathering and share with us and they all seem to be happy about it.
Who's giving who a bad name is a matter of dispute. And we really wonder, in
which way we jeopardize your lifestyle. Would you want communicate with us?

We'd be happy to hear it if we are being such a threat to these people but
obviously the reasons they state are not the right ones. In China people do not
own but sort of lease the land that is owned by the government. In the case of
the gathering site the site was "owned" by Mr Lee, who welcomed us with an open
heart. We had great relations with the local village and we were supported by
the chief of the group of villages of 3.000 people. If these people were there
they'd see and know that the shepherds make fires all around the place, even
under trees, and see that our fires are nowhere near presenting the slightest
danger of a fire. Plus it is the rainy season. These reasons are just a joke.

Apparently, these people know of rave parties but not about rainbow gatherings.
The proportion of people using the local herb within the rainbow family is NOT
higher than the proportion of such people in the foreign visitors of Dali, it
may even be less (considering the great amount of hash consumed in Dali). And
there are no drugs and no alcohol there. We didn't wreck a water source but
rather created one for use by the local monks and shepherds. They all are
thankful for the work we put in it. And this water that comes out of the earth
is still coming out of the earth running the same direction as pure as it was.
We didn't damage the fragile ground at 3100m. We didn't touch any living trees
or disturbed the nature in any other way. In fact we cleaned up some rubbish
that were left there by locals and presented live examples to the shepherds and
others there, of how to live cleanly, by not creating any rubbish. By the time
we left, everything has been absolutely cleaned up, not a single string tied on
a stick left up the mountain and all the waste came back to Dali (much less
than the rubbish we'd create if we had spent the same time in Dali). And rainy
season is a beautiful season, in case you haven't been up a mountain at that
time and you don't know. The air is really clear and when the sun shines it's
really bright and there are so many rainbows.

> So move on to some other place where you too can **** up the environment,

We didn't disturb the environment at all and we'd really like to know how we
undermined "the good relations of foreigners and locals". We'd rather speak
about this face to face so we can work it out. Of course this sacred old town
of Dali is not reserved for only a certain type of foreign visitor.

> Get a life, get a job. Cut your hair. Settle down. Put down roots.

Who's ordering us all this? Is it the rainbow family who's lacking all this?
Some of us have already jobs and some of us have no hair, believe it or not.

So these people feel "sponged off". what shall we do about it? We like organic
food but why would this stop us smoke? What a strange connection. It's good
that they didn't say "you're all vegetarians" or other "you're all"s, because
there are no "everybody is such" about rainbow, absolutely not. (Well, maybe
that we all love and respect the nature.) This "behaving disfunctionally" thing
is just strange. But, hey, how do these people know what we think? Has any
brothers or sisters gone to them and said "I'm enlightened and you're bad"?
Anyway, if they did, we'd know that they are not enlightened as soon as they
speak of "bad, evil, etc". "My choice is what I choose to do, and if I'm
causing no harm it shouldn't bother you; your choice is who you choose to be,
and if your causing no harm then you're alright with me."

> Stop thinking of things you can buy to take
> to other places to sell - isn't this just as bad as those corporations.

Weren't they just complaining that we're not spending enough money here?

> Go

We have peace with them, don't worry about us.
>

Why should we lie? We have NO organisers. It was all very well. It was not only
a few people, it was in fact a perfect number for a perfect gathering. And
unfortunately we drink much less than the average foreign visitors here. (take
a look at the main streets of Dali late night and see who's giving a bad name
to the westerners.)

Such a bundle of lies. Sorry I had to use this word this time because these
people obviously haven't been anywhere near the gathering. We didn't thrash any
sacred mountain, in fact, the monks of the meditation center up there were
really happy to hear that we were coming and we spend great time in their
company during the seedcamp and the gathering. They were surprised and happy to
see how we work with the nature and each other. And we didn't leave ANY scars
on the mountain. And of course we have walked those ways many times with the
locals, how would we find the place and be there if they hadn't helped us in
the first place. We had good communication and good relations with the local
community. Many nights they invited some of us to stay in the village and many
people went and stayed there. They also came to the site everyday and had our
tea and our food. It was all flawless. Except for that some of the goats tried
to eat pieces of my tent.
>
> Why do you all look the same?
>
We don't. Why do these guys think we do? The community here in Dali is a great
example of the diversity of Rainbow family. We have absolutely no majority of
appearance (sorry that I'll go into this, I was just talking about this
yesterday with one sister). There is no dreadlocked or shaved majority, there
is not a single piece of clothing that the majority of us share, some like
natural material clothes they make while some wear printed T-shirts they buy
somewhere. And that's the beauty, the colours of the rainbow.

> take
> your hemp t-shirts, take your patchouli and sandalwood incence and **** ***.

It's hilarious. I haven't seen a single person with a hemp t-shirt at the
gathering or around the rainbow scene in Dali, while I saw many on the street
among the Chinese and international travelers. Can they be spotting the wrong
people? And what about the insence? smile
>
> Did the people here invite you? No.

Yes, some did. Sorry we couldn't ask each and every Dalite.

> Did other foreigners want you here? No.
>
Yes, some did. And we couldn't ask each and every foreigner also.

We are also trying to make a difference and we do make a difference. We do care
and respect the people and the culture here, clearly much much more than the
average tourist who buy souvenirs and get drunk and leave. And we do much
teaching and learning in all sorts of ways.

I hope this will help to get through this misunderstandings. We have done
nothing wrong and we wish to know if we have created any disturbance. We will
need to speak to these people face to face and learn the real reason behind
their disturbances. Once more, I wished they'd talk to us instead of mailing
this group.

May the truth light our path,
May we deal with our problems with open hearts,
May all beings be happy,
